Health warnings for Lakes Puketirini and Rotokaeo

Two new health warnings are now in place for Lakes Rotokaeo (cyanobacteria/blue- green algae) and Puketirini (bacterial).
Cyanobacteria health warnings are also in place for Lakes Kainui, Arapuni, Rotokauri, Waikare and Ngā Roto.
The cyanobacteria concentrations in Lake Rotokaeo have risen significantly leading to the latest public health warning and Medical Officer of Health, Dr Kate Meerkerk, said people should avoid any activity in or near the lake that could lead to skin contact with the affected water, or the water being swallowed.
“Toxins released by cyanobacteria can trigger asthma and hayfever symptoms, skin rashes, stomach upsets, and neurological effects such as tingling around the mouth, headaches, breathing difficulties and visual problems.”
The symptoms may not appear until sometime after contact with affected water.
Scums formed by algal blooms are a particular risk because they contain a high level of toxins. If contact with scum does occur, skin should be rinsed clean and clothing changed as soon as possible.
Parents are urged to keep a close watch on children near these lakes, and dog owners are cautioned to stop their pets from drinking or swimming in affected areas too.
In the meantime, a health warning has also been issued for Lake Puketirini due to reports by a number of lake users becoming unwell with gastroenteritis symptoms.
Dr Meerkerk said the same precautions apply: to avoid any contact with the affected
water.
“If you do use the water for recreational purposes when a warning is in place, then you are potentially exposing yourself to harmful pathogens that can cause illnesses including gastroenteritis (diarrhoea and vomiting), respiratory illnesses, skin infections and ear infections.”
