Oral health service

Health NZ oral health service is a free community-based dental service for children under 18 years across the Northland Region. The service also provides community and hospital dental services.


Dental care for babies and under 5's

Babies

Babies born in the Northland Region are enrolled with the oral health service at birth. Children are due for their first oral health appointment when they turn one year old and are seen by a dental or oral health therapist at their nearest oral health clinic every year from their 1st birthday.

Preschool children see a oral health or dental therapist, by appointment, every year at their nearest oral health clinic or mobile clinic.

Dental care for school children

School children are seen at least once a year, by an oral health or dental therapist, either at a mobile clinic at their school or at their nearest clinic.

Dental care for teenagers

Teenagers receive their dental care from either a dentist in their community or the Northland District Health Board Oral Health Service. You have the right to choose your provider and both options will continue to provide free dental care until their 18th birthday.

Dental care for rangatahi


Community service card holders

If you are an adult with toothache, we provide a limited dental service (relief of pain only). You can self-refer or be referred by a general practitioner or private dentist.

To access this service you must:

  • be experiencing toothache
  • hold a current Community Services Card
  • normally reside in the Northland area.

There is a $40 co-payment charge for each appointment.

  • Whangārei
  • Dargaville
  • Kaikohe
  • Kaitaia.
