Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is severe scarring of your liver. Over time the scarring can stop your liver from working properly. This is liver failure. Cirrhosis cannot be cured, but it can be managed.

Fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease is a condition that happens when fat builds up in the cells of your liver. It is very common but most people only have a mild form that does not usually cause long-term problems.

Gallbladder and gallstones

Your gallbladder is a small organ that sits near your liver within your tummy (abdomen). It stores bile, a fluid made by your liver. Bile is released from your gallbladder into your intestine (bowel) to help digest the fats in your diet. Sometimes stones can form in the gallbladder. Gallstones are common.

Hepatitis A

An infectious liver disease caused by a virus. It is more common in developing countries. Some travellers need a vaccine.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that attacks and damages the liver. Find out about symptoms, causes, spread and treatment.

Hepatitis C

A virus that causes inflammation of your liver. If left untreated, Hepatitis C can cause liver disease (cirrhosis), liver failure and liver cancer.

Liver injuries

The liver can be torn, cut or crushed. Any of these injuries can cause the liver to bleed or bruise because it has a large blood supply.
