Acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease guidelines
Clinical guidelines on the prevention, diagnosis and management of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
About the guidelines
The Aotearoa New Zealand Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management of Acute Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease (2024) incorporate the latest evidence at the time of publishing. The guidelines make sure assessment and management reflect current understanding of this condition in New Zealand.
This is the 3rd edition of the guidelines. Previous editions in 2006 and 2014 were published by the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand. A sore throat management update was included in 2019. The 2024 guidelines bring together these previous clinical guidelines into a single comprehensive resource for health professionals.
Emerging national and international evidence will be reviewed regularly, and the guidelines will be updated as required.
