Diagnostic data and statistics

The demand for all diagnostic tests continues to grow around the world. There are more than 2.5 million radiology events each year in Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the diagnostic dashboard

The diagnostic dashboard shows wait times for the past 3 years by region and district for:

  • colonoscopies (bowel diagnostic)
  • CT (computerised tomography) and MR (magnetic resonance) scans
  • angiograms (type of heart scan).

Results represent Health NZ services delivered and outsourced diagnostic procedures.

Publishing this information provides a baseline as we work to reduce wait times.

Improving access to diagnostic tests means diagnosing more patients. This means people get the care they need sooner, which saves lives.

Faster access to diagnostic tests supports the following health targets.

  • Faster cancer treatment.
  • Shorter stays in emergency departments.
  • Shorter wait times for first specialist assessment.
  • Shorter wait times for elective treatment.

Health targets

Increased investment of $65 million in 2025/26 will provide 74,950 more diagnostic procedures and other improvements. This is the start of a multi-year improvement programme.

We are investing in:

  • our workforces
  • our digital systems and technology
  • growing stronger relationships community providers.
