About these positions

Take the next step in your career with multiple Fellowship positions available nationwide. These positions are designed for anaesthesia trainees in their Provisional Fellowship Year (PFY) prior to consultant practice, or for those in their first year following the completion of anaesthetic training.

Our fellowships offer senior-level training while allowing you to develop an area of special interest or sub-specialty. This year is designed to facilitate your transition to vocational registration and specialist practice.

Structure and duration

Term: 12-month fixed-term positions.

Dates: Aligned with the Australasian training year (February 2027 – February 2028).

Flexibility: positions start in August 2027, however 6-month positions may also be considered.

Accreditation: Many positions are accredited with ANZCA for the PFY, although not all positions across NZ may be accredited—please verify this with specific positions.

Position details and terms

The roster: Shift patterns vary across positions. Most include weekend work, with late shifts occurring weekly or fortnightly, depending on department size and the number of fellows. Fellowship duties are typically split between specialty interest areas, general clinical lists, and protected non-clinical time.

Employment terms: Fellows are employed under the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists’ collective agreement, with remuneration relating to your level of experience and qualifications.

Position requirements

To be successful in your application for a position, you must meet the following criteria:

Medical Council registration: You must be registered, or eligible to register, with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Clinical experience: Completion of ANZCA advanced training or equivalent.

International applicants: We welcome applications with equivalency of experience (e.g., UK ST6/7 or CCT) provided MCNZ eligibility is met.
